In
1979 Stax released the SR-Lambda, a product that has continued
over the years to enjoy
quite a following among audiophiles from all over the world. This
is a product that has grown in maturity as the years have gone
by through the incorporation of new technology and materials.
Although it came into being in the analog age, the SR-Lambda is
a rare example of a long-running model that is equipped with forward-looking
qualities. In doing so, it has remained an entirely modern product
also in the digital age. The SR-Lambda series is still going strong
in 2009, some thirty years after its release. To commemorate this,
Stax are releasing worldwide, one thousand SR-404 Limited products
based on special specifi cations.
Use
of a newly developed silver-plated hybrid cable
Even when the same speaker unit is being used, the final sound
quality is likely to differ considerably depending on the capacity
and dimensional ratio of the enclosure, the structure, the materials,
the design and parts of the network, and even the cables used
for internal wiring. This means that, when evaluating the cables
used in an audio system, it is necessary to
pay particular attention to a whole range of conditions such as
the current transmission and the voltage transmission sections.
In the case of headphones, it’s also important to take into
special account, the fl exibility and internal breakage, which
is caused by the extremely high flexing frequency during use.
The SR-404 Limited is equipped with an exclusive, newly developed
cable. The core cable makes use of a highly reputed 6N Cu highpurity
soft copper cable (diameter of 0.14 × 3) with six silver-plated
soft copper wires (diameter of 0.08 × 9) set around the
core cable. In order to reduce the volume between the wires, the
overall structure is of a parallel type, as in the case of previous
models. This has made it possible to enhance yet further the openness
of the sound and to add a sense of natural scale and immediacy
to the existing Lambda series.
Inclusion
of real sheep’s leather ear pads
The real leather ear pads have been met with such favourable response
through their use on Stax’s high-end ear speakers, they
have now been re-designed for use with the SR-404 and are included
with the Limited version. Using real leather brings a number of
added benefits. Firstly it achieves better airpermeability. Secondly
it improves the way in which the speakers fit on the head offering
greater flexibility and this in turn contributes significantly
to improving the clarity of the sound.
Body
design and emblem
Like all Stax models, the SR-404 is beautifully
constructed thought out and a high-class matt black has been used
as the body colour for this limited one thousand-piece release.
The legend “Lambda Series 30th Anniversary” proudly
graces the head arc and the emblem “SR-404 LIMITED”
is placed on the top andsides of the main unit.
One
of the best just got better
The Stax SR-404 has long been a person favourite
of Nigel Crump at Symmetry. Upon hearing the new Limited
version, it was like jumping back to the moment when first hearing
the original and discovering something truly magical all over
again. The limited one thousand-piece (worldwide) release of the
Stax SR-404 means only a lucky few will own and enjoy what will
quickly become a collectors item for many a generation to come.

very special “ECC99” high-power dual triode...
Introduction
An all-new limited edition driver unit has been
launched to enjoy STAX ear speakers in the finest way possible.
The exceptional performance of the SRM-600 Limited opens up
a new dimension of music
reproduction, where nothing else comes even close! The output
stage of the SRM-600 Limited has
adopted a high-power dual triode “ECC99” from Slovakia
JJ Electronic. This triode is renowned for its high-grade vacuum
tube technology and manufacturing. The detail and dynamics that
the addition of this triode brings, further enhances the
quality and performance of the SRM-600 Limited, which is more
than a little special.
The newest hybrid type driver unit with FET input and dual triode
output, adopting a pure
Class-A balanced amplification circuit
Output stage employing “ECC99” high-power dual triode.
The vacuum tube from JJ Electronic (one of the best and most-advanced
devices available today)
is manufactured with the assembly accuracy of ±0.02mm
or less and up to 5,000 hours
of lifetime test. Essentially, the “ECC99” is a
high-power dual triode developed for the
driver stage of a power amplifi er as well as for the output
stage of a preamplifi er. In this
new driver unit the tube is used for the output stage featuring
a pure class-A, balanced amplifi cation circuit. Taking advantage
of a dual triode enclosing two triodes inside, the HOT and COLD
signals can be amplified and output through each triode. With
its high linearity and ample power bandwidth, the SRM-600 Limited
faithfully reproduces music
signals that quickly change dynamically. Input stage with pair-matched
low noise FET
Low-noise, high-impedance discrete FET’s have been employed
for the input stage.
These devices are strictly selected by STAX so that the HOT
and COLD parts of the balanced signals
are amplifi ed in mirror image. They are used in a pair-matched
hybrid confi guration, which also heat balance into consideration.
This enables the XLR balanced input to perform a purely balanced
transmission and amplifi cation straight from input to output.
Moreover, the RCA input also keeps its sound purity in such
way a way that the GND side is simply connected to the COLD
side without using an inverting amplifi er, and a high-quality
audiograde relay serves as the three-line input selector.
Power
supply with large-sized power transformer and low ripple circuit
The
power supply section supporting the pure balanced transmission/amplification
circuit
has adopted a large-sized power transformer with the biggest
capacity among STAX
driver units. This ensures an adequately wide dynamic range
as well as the stable operation
even when mains voltage fluctuates. Simultaneously, low-noise,
low-loss short key
barrier diodes as well as capacitors with large capacitance
are incorporated in the
rectifi cation circuit to drastically eliminate ripples distorting
sound. Moreover, the heater power supply circuit
for the “ECC99” high-power dual triode features
a righ-and-left channel independent construction, which greatly
improves both
the S/N ratio and the channel separation
Strictly
selected components such as high soundquality 4-gang volume
controller
The
high sound quality 4-gang volume controller with double-axis
structure ideally
adjusts the input level of HOT and COLD signal on both right
and left channels. Furthermore,
non-magnetic audio-grade carbon film resistors are used for
the load resistance.
