This week ending 12 May 2012, I decided to practice what I preach. I had to move 18 months ago due to the need to accommodate my Mum. I left behind a really nice listening room with its own dedicated power supply. There the Distribution Board (DB), was in the same area so it was easy to set up. The new home was a problem. The DB is in the under stairs cupboard across the hall which has a solid tiled concrete floor. With 10 foot ceilings it was going to look ugly if exposed, and running around the outside of the house very expensive. Following a few accumulative nuisance earth leakage power trippings I decided to bite the bullet and go for a dedicated supply. The hall floor tiles would have to come up, and a chase put in and then finally carpet to cover the mess as tile re-instatement was not an option. I called in a local approved electrician and decided on the plan of action. It was decided to install a new radial using the Furutech FP-3TS762. This 20 amp cable is very high spec and made for the job. No need for a ring main as it equates to 4.2amps per KW at 240v = 4.76kW so plenty of headroom here as the total demand from my system is less than 1kW. This Furutech cable is almost double the size of the cable used in a domestic ring main, so no doubling up was neccessary. I needed 9m. From the DB a short run was made to a Furutech FP-1363 double socket. Its job is to house two Quantum Qv2 AC harmonisers. From there the supply was extended through a flexiduct in the newly cut hall trench to the flying floor in the listening room, terminating with another Furutech FP-1363 double socket.
It took a day and about £850.00 (RRP) in parts (except the Qv2s) plus the electrician's time. My install was more difficult than most and the Missus was not too pleased with all the dust, but now it is done the rewards are fantastic, re-affirming my recommendation to all, that having a dedicated power supply to the listening room, brings its rewards. I can not stress enough that using the qualified electrician is essential. It brings quality to the installation and an attention to detail in all terminations, in particular the earthing needs, which is very important. I can tell you the rest of my power set up. From the wall I use my best power cord. Being the UK ODIN dealer that is a no brainer. I run to a Quantum QRT Qbase6 which keeps 4 more Qv2s. From the primary earth location on the Qbase6 I feed a QRT Qx4 which is daisy chained to an Audience aR8 TSS2 Teflon 8 way power conditioner which provides distribution to my components. One of the spare ways feeds a stand alone Qx4. I use fuse upgrades in every plug, and each plug has been upgraded to a Furutech FP-1363. Price
